Range

Se. Asia;
Fragmented distribution;
Presently breeds in 5-6 isolated populations extending from se. India (Kolleru Lake and Telineelapuram in Andhra Pradesh, Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam, Kokkare Bellur in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu), Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia (Tonle Sap Lake as well as Koh Andeth and Borey Chulsar Districts of Tekeo Province), Laos, Vietnam, se. Malay Peninsula and se. China (Kiangsu on the lower Yangtze River, Xinjian lakes, Chekang, Fukien, Kwangtung, Kwangsi, se. Yunnan, Hainan) and possibly Sumatra. Movements are poorly known, but occasionally visits se. Asia and the Philippines.
Formerly in Persian Gulf, Pakistan, Nepal, Java and the Philippines (Luzon and Mindanao).
