Range

Tropical Ethiopian, Oriental, and Australasian Regions;
Two main populations with many isolated populations;
(1) S. of 18°N in sw. Mauritania, s. Mali, s. Niger, Senegambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, c. Chad, c. and s. Sudan, Ethiopia, w. Somalia, Central African Republic, Zaire, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya (along lower Tana River), Tanzania (Changana), Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Angola, Namibia, South Africa. Isolated population in s. Iraq (Kut and Amara) and sw. Iran.
(2) Madagascar in the n. from Antsiranana to Morondava and on the high plateau at Antananarivo (breeds in only one n. location).
(3) Se. Iraq. W. Pakistan (Punjab and Indus River), India (e. to Assam), Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia ( Koh Andeth and Borey Chulsar Districts of Tekeo Province) and Vietnam, Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Sulawesi and Philippines (Luzon, Mindanao, Mindoro, Negros). Visits Sumbawa and Timor. Formerly in s. Turkey and Bali.
(4) New Guinea, D'Entrecasteaux Archipelago (Fergusson Is.) and Australia (e. of a line between Adelaide to Broome in nw. Western Australia, Northern Territory (Kakadu National Park), Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and n. and e. South Australia). Ranges to the Lesser Sundas and s. Moluccas.
