Range

Nearly holarctic;
Fragmented distribution with two major populations;
Ne. Canada (s. Baffin Is. from Crook's Inlet to Cumberland Sound s. to c. and e. Quebec (n. shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Gaspe Peninsula), n. Labrador, possibly s. to n. New Brunswick and Newfoundland), w. Greenland and Iceland. Winters s. to Maine. Occasionally reaching New York. In Iceland, most birds winter off the Reykjanes Peninsula. N. Siberia from the Lena River and Lake Baikal s. to n. Mongolia and e. to Kamchatka, Sakhalin Is., Kuril Is. and the mountains of n. Japan (c. Hokkaido and n. Honshu). In North America from the Aleutains, w. and c. Alaska n. to Anaktuvuk Pass, across n. Canada (n. Yukon, n. British Columbia and sw. Alberta (Valley of Ten Peaks, McDonald Creek, Glacier National Park) s. to sc. and se. Alaska (Alaskan Peninsula), Vancouver Is. and the nw. United States in the Sierra Nevada of e. California, c. Idaho, nw. Montana, w. Wyoming and occasionally to sw. Colorado.
Winters along the Pacific coasts of Siberia s. to e. and s. Korea, Japan, n. China s. to Shandong and California in North America.

Winter: Along the Pacific coast from the Aleutians, coastal s. ALK, w. BCO, WAS, ORG and n. CAL and along the Atlantic coast from LAB s. to New England and Long Island.
