Range
Africa s. of the Sahara;
(1) S. Mauritana, Senegambia (Sengal Delta) and s. Mali s. to Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria (Niger Delta), Cameroon, s. Niger, Gabon, Congo, Angola and n. Namibia e. through s. Chad (Lake Chad), s. Sudan extending into s. Egypt (formerly up the Nile Valley as far as Abu Simbel before construction of the Aswan Dam) and w. and c. Ethiopia, then s. through the Central African Republic and Zaire (absent from forested areas), Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Kenya to ex. sw. Somalia s. through Tanzania, Malawi (Rift Valley lakes) to c. Mozambique and Zambia (Luangwa Valley, s. limit ca. the Zambezi River).
(2) S. of the Zambezi River from c. Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, c. Mozambique s. to s. South Africa (absent from the desert sw. region).
