Range
Palearctic;
(1) Europe from Iceland to the British Isles, n. Scandinavia then e. across Russia to n. Siberia, Anadyrland, the Kamchatka Peninsula, Commander and Kuril Is. and is. in the Bering Sea s. to continental Europe in w. and c. France, n. Italy, cn. Turkey, sw. and c. Russia to the Black Sea, Caspian Sea, Aral Sea and Lake Balkhash. Then, in the Caucasus, w. China (w. Sinkiang), Mongolia, Manchuria (s. Heilangkiang, e. Kirin, s. Liaoning), s. Siberia and Japan (mountains lakes in Hokkaido s. to c. Honshu).
Migrates down Nile Valley and s. to Tanzania.
Winters in n. Africa Morocco, n. Algeria Tunisia, n. Libya and Egypt (Nile Valley), tropical w. Africa in Senegambia, Guinea-Bissau, c. Mali, Lake Chad, n. Cameroon s. to ne. Nigeria and in e. Africa in c. and e. Sudan, Ethiopia, Erithrea, nw. Somalia, ex. ne. Zaire, Uganda, w. and c. Kenya and n. Tanzania from Nov. to Mar. mainly above 1400m on ponds in and w. of the Rift Valley, Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, India (Little Rann of Kutch, as high as 3000m in Ladakh), China (Hong Kong), Taiwan, Burma, nw. and c. Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, n. and c. Laos, Hainan, s. Asia, Taiwan, Marianas, Borneo, Java, Philippines rarely reaching Palau and Micronesia (Marshall Is.). (2) Resident in the Pribilof Is. and Aleutian Is. e. to Akutan, Alaska.
