W. Palearctic to c. Siberia;
W. population:
N. and e. Europe in Scandinavia (Liminka Bay, Oulu Province, n. Finland, Biebrza Marsh, Poland, n. Germany, Hungary in the Hortobagy National Park) to w. Russia. Small isolated populations in Turkey and the Caucasus in Armenia and possibly Azerbaijan, w. Caspian Sea.
Winters s. to France, Portugal (Montados e. of Evora on the border with Spain), Spain (Gallocauta, Laguna de la Janda, Cadiz, Spain), Israel (Hula Valley), Jordan (plain between Irbid and Mafraq, Azraq Oasis Wildlife Reserve), se. Iraq, sw. Iran, nw., ne. and e. Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya).
E. population:
C. and e. Asia in c. Siberia e. to the Kolyma River s. to the Aral Sea, Kirghiz steppes and China (nw. Manchuria) and n. India.
Winters in s. India, China (middle Yangtze River), and se. Asia.
