New Zealand, se. Australia and is. of the sw. Pacific Ocean;
Three or four breeding populations;
(1) New Zealand (North Islands and South Island) and Chatham Is.
Winters in New Zealand, e. Australia (c. Queensland from Cairns s. in New South Wales (Botany Bay and Lake Bathurst), Victoria (Port Phillip Bay), se. South Australia), Tasmania (Isthmus on Bruny Island), Norfolk Is., Lord Howe Is., New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji.
(2) Auckland Is.
