Fragmented distribution, but wanders worldwide. ;
(1) N. Europe from Iceland, Faroe Is., n. British Isles, n. Scandinavia, n. Russia, locally in n. Siberia e. to Anadyrland and s. to the Orkney and Shetland Is., s. Scandinavia, c. Russia and c. Siberia mostly n. of the Arctic Circle.
Winters in Africa and nw. India.
(2) C. Russia.
Winters in e. Africa and Madagascar.
(3) E. Siberia.
Winters in Taiwan, Australia in all coastal regions of Western Australia, Northern Australia, Queensland (Barrier Reef islands), New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia to Tasmania and the Pacific Is. (4) N. Alaska and n. Canada from n. Yukon and nw. Mackenzie s. to w. and c. Alaska (Norton Sound, Alaska Range and Susitna River Highlands), sw. Yukon to nw. Ontario (w. Hudson Bay to nw. James Bay). Winters s. in the s. United States to n. South America (Brazil, e. Bahia).
