Range

Almost cosmopolitan:
Fragmented distribution;
(1) Cn. Siberia (Taymyr Peninsula, New Siberian Is. and possibly Yakutia). Spitsbergen (Svalbard) and n. Russia?
Winters in w. and s. Africa and probably Australasia.
(2) New Siberian Archipelago.
Winters s. to Australasia.
(3) E. Siberia (Chokotskiy Peninsula).
Winters in Australasia. Birds wintering in Australia are of uncertain races, but occur in coastal regions of Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland and Tasmania and in the interior of New South Wales, Victoria and ex. se. South Australia.
(4) Wrangel Is. and nw. Alaska from the Seward Peninsula and Delong Mountains e. to Point Barrow.
Winters in se. United States (Florida), s. Panama and n. Venezuela.
(5) N. Canada in the low arctic in the arctic is. e. to Ellesmere Is. s. to s. Victoria Is. and Southampton Is.
Migrates along the Atlantic coast of the United States (Delaware Bay).
Winters in ne. and s. South America (Brazil, e. Bahia).
(6) Canada on islands in the high arctic, n. Greenland and Spitsbergen (Svalbard).
Winters in w. Europe.
