Keewatin (Melville Penninsula and nw. coast of Hudson Bay at Cape Fullerton), Southampton Is., n. Baffin Is., n. Greenland, Spitsbergen (Svalbard) to Severnaya Zemlya Is., Taymyr Peninsula, Lena River Delta and New Siberian Is. A small population in n. Alaska at Barrow.
Winters along the coast s. from c. North America to s. South America (Brazil, e. Bahia) and from w. and s. Europe and Africa through s. Asia to Australia (coastal Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and se. South Australia) and a few tropical is. in the Pacific Ocean (Hawaiian Is.).
