Iceland, Faeroe Is., British Isles, Jan Mayen, Spitsbergen, Bear Is., Franz Josef Land, n. Europe from w. France and s. Scandinavia e. across n. Russia (Novaya Zemlya) and n. Siberia to Anadyrland, Koryakland and Commander Is. N. Alaska, n. Yukon, n. Mackenzie, Banks Is., Bathurst Is., n. Ellesmere Is., Labrador, Newfoundland s. to Aleutians, s. Alaska, s. Yukon, nw. British Columbia, s. Mackenzie, nw. Saskatchewan and n. Manitoba e. across c. and se. Canada, to New Brunswick and s. along the Atlantic coast to Massachusetts and Washington (Puget Sound).
Winter in s. Oceans off Australia (sw. Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria (Portland), e. New South Wales, se. Queensland and Tasmania) and Antarctic seas. Recorded off e. Brazil (e. Bahia).
